Black History Month: Lifting Black Women’s voices

For Black History Month, I have decided to use my small blog platform to uplift Black women who are doing incredible work for racial justice on social media platforms. For the most part, I will be highlighting Black women from TikTok because I am indebted to them for their hard and consistent labor working for justice. I have learned so much by quietly sitting at their knee, listening to their words and wisdom, and have been inspired by their fearlessness and their vulnerability.

For today, please hear these simple instructions from @whitewomanwhisperer. If you are on TikTok, please give her a follow. One final thought for any white people who might engage with these creators through this blog: I encourage you to engage with likes and shares or reposts, but try not to center your voice on their platform. This is about listening and learning and uplifting. It is not about you. I will also be giving a donation to each creator for their labor. If you can, I invite you to do so as well.

Here are her points:

  1. Respect it first, understand it later.
  2. Take things seriously but not personally.
  3. When you hear something meaningful, say thank you for sharing but don’t add your “relatable” story.
  4. Focus on “why” people are talking, not if it is correct or how they are saying it.

Thank you, White Woman Whisperer, for your emotional labor!
